How We Learned, Connected, and Grew at the Youth Leadership Summit 2024

On November 24, 2024, we came together for the Youth Leadership Summit—a day packed with inspiration, discovery, and meaningful conversations. Surrounded by fellow learners and dreamers, we explored new ideas, heard powerful stories, and learned practical skills to help us grow as individuals and as leaders.

Key Note Speaker: Tiffany Wang

The day started strong with an incredible keynote from Tiffany Wang, a Ph.D. candidate at Stanford University who’s breaking new ground in quantum and sustainable tech. As we listened, Tiffany shared her journey of self-discovery, and many of us could relate to her story of trial and error in figuring out what truly excites us.

She reminded us that it’s okay to not have everything figured out right away. Tiffany talked about her path, from double-majoring in Physics and Computer Science to diving into cutting-edge research. What stood out was her honesty about making mistakes and learning from them. "It’s never too late to try something new," she said, and we couldn’t agree more. Her advice about setting goals that align with our passions left us energized and ready to take on the day.

Alviso’s Environmental and Historical Legacy

The summit then shifted our focus to Alviso, a community with a fascinating history and critical environmental challenges. We first dived into the Alviso Environmental Report, where we learned about air and water quality issues affecting the area. The lack of sufficient sensors surprised many of us, but it also showed how much work still needs to be done to protect the environment.

Then came Alviso Untold History, a session led by Grant Han. As Grant shared stories about Alviso’s early days and its development over time, we felt like we were stepping back into history. It was a reminder of how understanding the past can help us shape a better future for our communities.

Machine Learning

In the afternoon, we turned to the power of technology. During the Machine Learning Project Report, we heard about an inspiring mission to use AI for good. The team shared how they’re building tools like chatbots to help nonprofits and how they’re opening doors for students from underserved backgrounds to learn and grow.

What resonated most with us was the focus on education and inclusivity. Seeing technology being used to solve real-world problems and empower communities reminded us of the potential we all have to make an impact.

Wrapping Up

We closed the day with a hands-on workshop on resumes and mock interviews. It was a chance for us to practice and improve, and many of us left feeling more prepared and confident about taking the next step in our careers.

Lessons

As the summit came to an end, we couldn’t help but feel inspired by everything we had learned. From Tiffany Wang’s motivational talk to the deep dive into Alviso’s environmental and historical challenges, and the innovative use of AI for good, every session gave us something to think about.

Most importantly, we walked away with more than just knowledge. We left with a sense of community, knowing that we’re all on this journey of growth together. The Youth Leadership Summit wasn’t just an event—it was a reminder that we have the power to create change, not just for ourselves but for the world around us. And that’s something worth celebrating.
