Water Conservation Committee Members Featured in Sunnyvale Teen Advisory Committee’s Presentation on Student-Led Environmental Projects

On April 8th, the Sunnyvale Teen Advisory Committee (TAC) presented to the Sunnyvale City Council at Sunnyvale City Hall, highlighting their accomplishments from the 2024-2025 school year. Their projects focused on promoting student carpools, expanding internship opportunities, and leading invasive plant replacement efforts within the Fremont Union High School District (FUHSD).

The presentation was led by TAC leader Maddy Zhang (Lynbrook High School), with support from CP Mentorship Water Conservation Committee members Aiden Zhang (Basis Independent Silicon Valley) and Mia Sun (Fremont High School). The Water Conservation Committee has played a key role in advancing environmental projects across FUHSD campuses.

Earlier this year, on March 2nd, 2025, Aiden Zhang represented the CP Mentorship NYLC (National Youth Leadership Council) team at the Sunnyvale Youth Advisory Group meeting at Sunnyvale City Hall. At the meeting, Aiden presented a $200 donation on behalf of the NYLC team to support native plant restoration projects at schools within the Fremont Union High School District (FUHSD).

This donation will help restore the pond area at Fremont High School by removing invasive bamboo, improving soil quality, and planting native species. The project also aims to preserve existing native plants, such as oak and redwood trees, while creating a welcoming habitat for local wildlife — including turtles, native ducks, and pollinators supported by nearby milkweed.

The CP Mentorship NYLC team is committed to collaborating with local organizations on environmental projects and community impact. Team members include Ruiwen Luo (Mission San Jose High School), Aiden Zhang (Basis Independent Silicon Valley), William Tang (Hillbrook Upper High School), and Annie Yu (The Harker School).

Sunnyvale Mayor Larry Klein and Councilmember Murali Srinivasan (former Vice Mayor) attended the meeting and praised the efforts of Sunnyvale youth leaders. Both the CP Mentorship NYLC team and the Sunnyvale Youth Advisory Group share a common vision: advancing water conservation, promoting climate resilience, and protecting local ecosystems through student-driven leadership and action.
