Water Conservation Committee Showcases Aquaponics System at FUHSD Earth Day Event, Earning Recognition for Environmental Leadership
On March 24, 2025, members of the CP Mentorship Water Conservation Committee—Mia Sun (Fremont High School), Aiden Zhang (Basis Independent Silicon Valley), Nathan Chiu (Mountain View High School), Tiffany Li (Pinewood School), and Russel Wang (Homestead High School)—shared their passion for sustainability by presenting an exciting Aquaponics system at the Fremont Union High School District (FUHSD) Earth Day event, held at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View.
Their dynamic booth captivated students, parents, and faculty, highlighting how this innovative farming technique combines aquaculture and hydroponics to create a water-efficient, self-sustaining ecosystem. The team passionately explained the science behind aquaponics, emphasizing its vital role in water conservation and its potential to help address global water scarcity. Their enthusiasm sparked meaningful conversations about sustainability, inspiring attendees to think about new ways to protect and preserve our planet’s most precious resource—water.
In addition to showcasing their Aquaponics system, the committee members had the opportunity to explore other water conservation techniques with their peers. They also connected with a professional working on rain garden projects, gaining valuable insights into sustainable water management and discussing how to bring real-life water conservation projects to life.
FUHSD Earth Day is an annual event that promotes sustainability and environmental education across the district’s five high schools and communities. Organized by the FUHSD Climate Collective Committee and supported by the Rotary Club of Cupertino Climate Action Committee, Silicon Valley Clean Energy, Silicon Valley Youth Climate Action Group, and the Fremont Union High Schools Foundation, the event drew over 1,250 guests and featured more than 400 student presenters.
Our Water Committee members’ Aquaponics system impressed attendees and earned them well-deserved recognition for their exceptional environmental stewardship and contributions to sustainability. Their efforts caught the attention of FUHSD Superintendent Mr. Graham Clark, FUHSD Trustee Rosa Kim, and Sunnyvale Council Member Murali Srinivasan, who took time to commend their inspiring work. The event truly celebrated youth leadership and innovation, paving the way for more exciting environmental initiatives in the future.
