Join the Intro to Robotics Workshop This Summer

On Saturday, July 19, 2025, CompassPoint Mentorship is teaming up with the Toyota Research Institute (TRI) to host a FREE Intro to Robotics Workshop for students in 7th and 8th grade. If you're curious about how robots work and want to build one yourself, this is the perfect event for you!

The workshop is led by the HOLA! Employee Resource Group at TRI, a team of passionate engineers and professionals who love to share their knowledge and inspire the next generation. They’ve created a two-part experience that teaches the basics of robotics in a fun and easy way—no experience needed!

🛠️ What You’ll Learn

The workshop is split into two sessions:

Session 1: What Is a Robot?

This session will happen at your school or a nearby location before the main event. You'll learn:

  • What makes something a robot

  • How robots are designed

  • How they make decisions and complete tasks

  • The Sense-Reason-Act cycle (how robots “think”)

  • How robots can even have a personality!

Through games, examples, and group discussions, you'll begin to understand what goes into building a robot.

Session 2: Let’s Build a Robot!

This session takes place at the Toyota Facility in Los Altos, where the fun really begins! Students will:

  • Work with real robotics components

  • Learn to program simple actions

  • Complete mini challenges

  • Work together to make their robots move and respond

By the end of the day, you’ll have built a robot and watched it come to life!

💬 Why Join?

Robotics is all around us—from cars that drive themselves to robots that help doctors perform surgery. This workshop gives students a chance to explore how these amazing machines work, all while having fun and making new friends. You'll get to ask questions, try new things, and maybe even discover a new passion!

The event will take place from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM at the Toyota Research Institute, located at 4440 El Camino Real, Los Altos, CA 94022. It’s open to 7th and 8th grade students, with a maximum group size of 25 participants to keep the experience personal and interactive. Best of all, it’s completely free, and lunch is included!
